Extra Large Ornamental Bow

Christmas decoration for large shopping centre.

Quite an honor to be asked to create decoration to go on this organisation’s largest street sign on Gold Coast.

The request was simple, create both ribbon bow that won’t over dominate the sign but be seen from street along with an anti theft way to attach it to the sign without damage. Multiple materials were trialed with varied results for longevity, high wind, inclement weather and risk of injury to passing traffic.

A material was decided upon that could hold its shape after heat and then the challenge of understanding which composites would be strong enough to bond the 4x layers together. To achieve the requested Colour a special primer was sourced by top chemical manufacturer so the brilliant Gold paint could be applied.

The brackets were then manufactured and the use of anti theft fasteners from 4x4 driving lights were used to keep it secure.

Shipping Container Office

It began with an empty warehouse with only a toilet on the side. The new owners had the usual criteria for an office which was needed asap. Space for 2-3 staff, board room, waiting room and space for office equipment. So it began with drafting up the best use of space using the usual methods of building.

With the plans complete, on the way to the frame supplier, the owner arrives saying “what if it was built using shipping containers”? Down with the plans and out with the measuring tape. Within the week 6x B grade shipping containers were sourced and delivered and so began the game of ‘Tetris’ fitting them together within the space and around the bathrooms which also created the kitchen space as a bonus. As the build progressed each container was treated so that they could be moved independently to another location and plugged in as an asset the business could keep if moving on from the space one day. Another was that the visiting client couldn’t recognise they were in shipping containers when entering the front door.

This was a great challenge and through some unusual methods came together for a great finished product.

Wheelchair Internal House Lift

A request to fill a dream of living in a 2 story house was to install a lift to an existing dwelling without it being an eye saw and spoiling any street appeal of the already pretty house.

Upon consultation with multiple suppliers it was apparent that creating one internally next to a staircase or other positions for a healthy dollar fee was possible, still with heavy modifications to the house. After building a relationship with a supplier they came back to us and asked if we would be able to fit their already constructed demonstration model from their warehouse and if so could save over 50% on the purchase price.

Our response was “we’ll make it fit”. After a day of contemplating scenarios and measurements it was decided to install it internally of the garage to the external of second level to be hidden by the already existing wardrobe door on the second level. This meant that the user could exit the car and enter the house or bedroom without dealing with weather etc.

It was cladded internally to look as a storage cupboard in garage and externally with modern vertical orb material to contrast nicely against existing materials with a bonus of being completely invisible from the street.

Result was 4 person lift functioning with modern safety requirements whilst being aesthetically pleasing to look at.

Custom Wheelchair Mods

We have customised many wheelchairs and other devices over the years including turning old wheelchairs into off road or Beach wheelchairs etc.

This electric wheelchair was modified to suit the user’s unique situation of medical apparatus that needed to be accounted for when in transport. Extra head support and custom harness to hold them in was required amongst other minor changes.

This space is open to unique needs and requirements which normally is not available off the shelf. We love the challenge of adaption and customization to fill this space and understand that time is of the essence in these situations.

Track Trainer - Wheelchair

A special request for a sturdy static trainer came through from a track athlete. A large emphasis was on height so the athlete could transfer from daily wheelchair into track chair mounted on the trainer as easily as possible.

The next priority was weight and simple disassembly so the trainer could be packed down to travel with the track chair internationally.

Adjustment was built in to the trainer to cope with other brand track chairs and to change resistance according to its position of the axle.

The result was the athlete could pick up the trainer with one hand and disassemble in couple of minutes solo for packing.

Vanlife Build #1

As a personal project to fuel the love for riding mountain bikes, decided to build out a van to get to races and stay with everything needed in all climates. As a personal goal wanted to complete the build entirely solo because this project allowed the use of skill sets developed in one project. There were some ‘must have’ features in the build which were:

  1. Cool enough for a Queensland summer with doors shut at night and warm enough for the snowy’s.

  2. Bikes stored safely inside.

  3. Able to do quick overnight stay without needing to set up or open out anything.

  4. Shower and get into bed without dragging dirt into the van.

  5. With doors shut should feel like cozy cabin.

Some handy features I thought would be cool I added:

  1. Movie projector with pull down screen.

  2. Air compressor for tyres etc.

  3. Apple TV

Van Build #2

Following a mechanical failure in Van #1 that was too costly to repair a second van was sourced for reliability. Toyota SLWB is their largest standard van which I sourced purely for reliability even though far less suited to a build out, I chose to make it the best possible. With all the same features as Van#1:

  6. Movie projector with pull down screen.

  7. Air compressor for tyres etc.

  8. Apple TV

This one would take 3x bikes with all pitting equipment stored in garage under the bed. As a bonus the bed base would bi-fold back to open up the possibility of carrying something tall in the garage space if needed.

Workshop Heater

Not our design but thought it looked cool and had plenty of 44 gallon drums around.

All recycled materials were used bar the door and flu vent which is very satisfying cuddling up next to it in the deep of winter.

For an added bonus we resurrected an old fan to gently push the heat through the top drum holes designed as a radiator. Ends up being the centre piece and a great meeting place in the workshop.
